Analysis of the LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU virus/worm
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The virus/worm hit Belgium and the rest of the world on Thursday 15/04/2000. A lot of important
companies were struck including banks, factories and my dads work :).That's where I got the
little bugger. The virus/worm is a big vbscript that spreads by email (smells like Melissa :))
and infects every script on your computer.

Lifecycle
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All starts by opening an attachment on an email, then the script starts.
It copies itself into:
$windir/Win32DLL.vbs ($windir = c:\windows on most windows systems)
$systemdir/MSKernel32.vbs ($systemdir = c:\windows\system)
$windir/LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs
Next it adds those files in the registry so they auto-start on boot.

After that it changes the default page of internet explorer, that way it downloads an executable
from a site when IE opens. If the file has already been downloaded it also adds that into the
registry and changes the default page to "about:blank".

Then it starts sending emails with the script attached to all the people in your addresslist
Finally the big mess starts, the virus scans every harddisk and networkdisk for extentions:
Vbs, vbe, js, jse, css, wsh, sct, hta, vbs, jpg, jpeg
All files found are overwritten by the virus and when mp2's or mp3's are found it copies itself
to a vbs script in the same directory. And when mIRC is found a small mIRC script is created
which sends an html page, which tries to infect you using IE, to every user that joins a channel
you're in.

EXE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It cracks the share passwords and sends those + ipaddr by email to the creator of this virus
(I couldn't get this program because the server was shutdown, thanks to G0Dfarter for checking it)

Disinfection
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open regedit and start deleting the malicious entries
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run\MSKernel32
HKEY_HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\RunServer\Win32DLL
HKEY_HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run\WIN_BUGSFIX

Search for WIN-BUGSFIX.exe and remove it.
Remove $dirsystem\LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.HTM

Check files with extensions: Vbs, vbe, js, jse, css, wsh, sct, hta, vbs, jpg, jpeg and check for
infection, if so delete them (and replace them with the original).

If you have mIRC is installed remove the script.ini file.
Remove all the emails, maybe warn the people in your addresslist so they don't open the attachment.

Prevention
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is only 1 rule in these cases: do NOT open suspicious files
The number one cause why this virus is so affective is that in windows everything is linked.
You can control your entire computer from a simple wordmacro (and worst).
The best thing to do is turn off all sorts of scripting in windows (if possible).

As long as the drive is functioning properly, you are lulled into a false sense of security. However, when the trusted hard drive suddenly fails, this is more than just a minor inconvenience. The resulting loss of data is often immensely damaging. Ashampoo HDD Control is therefore ideally suited to boost the performance of your drive, guard against disk failure and remove clutter from your hard drives, while performing all three functions of monitoring, maintenance and defragmentation.
Monitoring, clean-up and defragmentation
The Ashampoo HDD Control software performs hard disk maintenance for you. This involves taking measures to prevent potential failures and crashes before they occur. Towards this end, the program combines several functions available for the first time in this particular configuration.

Monitoring:

The software supports all commonly available IDE and serial ATA drives. Please note, however, that devices connected to the system via USB, firewire or RAID controller often do not support this function. Based on the type of drive in use, Ashampoo HDD Control provides the user with all important facts and information, including the drive serial number, firmware version, cache size, number of configured partitions, drive space and current temperature. Microsoft intends to release Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview to invited guests who register to sign up for Office 2010 CTP Program only by July 2009. Office 2010 was previously known by codename Office 14 (taken cue from its version), and wrongly assume to be Office 2009. The setup installer of both 32bit (x86) and 64bit (x64) Office 2010 Technical Preview 1 (TP 1) has been leaked to BT network. The leaked Office 2010 Technical Preview 1 has the version of 14.0.4006.1010, a pre-trial version provided to premium Microsoft partners.

Its unclear whether it is the leaked Office 2010 TP1 build will be the version that is going to be released officially by Microsoft in July. And its still unclear yet whether Microsoft will make available publicly for Office 2010 Beta downloads, which is said to be will be having 2 betas - Beta 1 in July 2009 and another Beta 2 in November 2009. The betas is said to be different from Technical Preview, where TP is just meant as an engineering milestone for the development of Office 2010 and related products that leading to RTM that will reach in July 2009, according to Office 2010 IT Blog. Office 2010 is expected to RTM and released as final product in March 2010, with the exception of Exchange Server 2010, where Exchange Server 2010 beta already available from official download links.

The setup installer of the leaked download will install Microsoft Office Plus 2010 edition, with Access 2010, Excel 2010, InfoPath 2010, OneNote 2010, Outlook 2010, PowerPoint 2010, Publisher 2010, and Word 2010. Project Professional 2010, SharePoint Designer 2010 and Visio Professional 2010 are also included in the leaked RAR archive download. Important note is that Office2010 TP 1 is still in early stage of development, and may contain bugs, although most individual programs such as Word 2010 and Excel 2010 are usable in everyday life. Its also interesting to know that Office 2007, the predecessor of Office 2010, is version 12. Office 2010 will be version 14, skipping version 13, the number that Microsoft assumes may be not so lucky.

The main advantage of ESET Recovery CD is the fact that ESS runs independent of the host operating system, while it has a direct access to the disk and the entire filesystem. Scanning speed is pretty fast compared to other rescue disks. The scan is very thorough as it tries to scan files inside compressed archive and also in setup installers. With the latest virus signature database, it manages to catch all of known viruses by June 26, 2009 (Virus signature database 4193).

For the rescue CD to use effectively, you must provide that the computer boots from the ESET SysRescue boot media. Boot priority can be modified in the BIOS. Alternatively, you can invoke the boot menu during the computer startup - usually using one of the F9 - F12 keys depending on the version of your motherboard/BIOS.

The content of the CD will be written to the operating memory (RAM).

After booting up, ESS will start. Since ESET SysRescue is used only in specific situations, some protection modules and program features present in regular ESS are not needed; their list is narrowed down to Computer scan, Update, and some sections in Setup. Capability of updating virus signature database is the most important feature of ESET SysRescue.

Suppose that computers in the network have been infected by a virus modifying executable (EXE) files. ESS is capable of cleaning all infected files except for explorer.exe, which can't be cleaned, not even in the Safe mode. That is due to the fact that explorer.exe, as one of the essential Windows processes, is launched in the Safe mode as well. ESS cannot perform any action with the file and therefore it remains infected.
In such a scenario, you can employ ESET SysRescue to solve the problem. ESET SysRescue does not require any component of the host operating system. Therefore it is capable of processing (cleaning, deleting) any file on the disk.

Aircrack-ng is an 802.11 WEP and WPA-PSK keys cracking program that can recover keys once enough data packets have been captured. It implements the standard FMS attack along with some optimizations like KoreK attacks, as well as the all-new PTW attack, thus making the attack much faster compared to other WEP cracking tools. In fact, Aircrack-ng is a set of tools for auditing wireless networks.

2. AirSnort 0.2.6
AirSnort is a wireless LAN (WLAN) tool which recovers encryption keys. AirSnort operates by passively monitoring transmissions, computing the encryption key when enough packets have been gathered. 802.11b, using the Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP), is crippled with numerous security flaws. Most damning of these is the weakness described in " Weaknesses in the Key Scheduling Algorithm of RC4 " by Scott Fluhrer, Itsik Mantin and Adi Shamir. Adam Stubblefield was the first to implement this attack, but he has not made his software public. AirSnort, along with WEPCrack, which was released about the same time as AirSnort, are the first publicly available implementaions of this attack.

3. AeroPeek 2.02
AiroPeek NX captures and decodes packets, with special emphasis on the 802.11 protocol. AiroPeek NX receives all wireless LAN packets based on user settable configuration parameters and stores these packets in memory. For example, you can set a filter to capture all packets, only 802.11 authentication request frames, or all frames except beacons frames. Just about any combination of packet types and protocols are possible.

Selection of several elements in the list of downloads
To improve the efficiency of the list of downloads, you can select several downloads at once. This is done by selecting the elements of the list when you press Ctrl or Shift. With several elements of the list, you can carry out operations against them just as well as over one element.
Dragging downloads with mouse and keyboard
After selection one or more elements from the list of downloads, you can easely drag them to any position. You can also move elements in the list using the shortcut Alt + "up-arrow" and Alt +"down-arrow ".
Context menu
After clicking the right mouse button on the element appears context menu from which you can conduct various transactions over the downloads. Depending on status of the download, some menu items may be unavailable.

Hotkeys
F4 - appears window "Add Download".
F5 - starts to download the selected file(s).
F6 - stops downloading of selected file(s).
Del - removes file(s) from the list of downloads.
Alt+Up - moves the element up in the list.
Alt+Down - moves the element down in the list.
Alt+F4 - closes the program.
Ctrl+C - copies the link to the clipboard.
Ctrl+V - inserts a link(s) from the clipboard to the window "Add Download".
Ctrl+A - selects all elements in the list.
F1 - appears window "User Manual".
